“Give me a place to stand and a lever long enough, and I will move the world”.
What a powerful quote within Shirky’s article, “Here Comes Everybody”. The article demonstrates the power of the new technological world we live in. However, the power is not within the technology (which still blows my mind), but within the level of connection human beings can now make with each other. That IS what life is all about anyways, right? All people want is to connect with the world around them in some form or fashion. A relationship, nature, social events. Everything we do is to connect or relate to the world. We are lucky enough to live in a country and in an age where the level of connections to our world has exploded in the palm of our hand. So how can we use this thirst for connectivity for good? To promote public health? Well, the stronger the connection, the more powerful your message will be. Here are some of my simple tips to establish a strong connection with your audience:
1. Relate to your audience. Don’t get too specific. This doesn’t mean you have to have a Gothic themed blog or pink text. There are certain things that EVERYBODY can relate to, such as the yearning for justice in Shirky’s article. Don’t just blog to blog. Find something powerful that your entire audience (in our case now, the entire world) can relate to.
2. Be honest and authentic. In a world where any and every thought can be voiced instantly, honesty and authenticity can be quite invigorating. It makes your message transparent because readers don’t have to sort through the bull.
3. Trim the fat. Nowadays, everything moves very quick, and a bunch of cluttered text will get readers quickly clicking to the next article. Getting to the point not only helps readers stay engaged but establishes a stronger connection to you and your point.
4. Strike a cord. Emotions are the core of human connection. Laughter, sympathy, anger, inspiration. Every emotion is powerful and every person yearns to feel these emotions. Find a way to move people through their emotions and they will yearn for anything else you have to offer.
“Keep Calm and Carry On”. The “Keep Calm and…” slogan was initially conceived by the British to motivate and boost public moral through World War II. Today, a vastly successful app, The Chive, adopted the slogan and literally everybody can relate to the slogan because you can plug whatever you want into it. The Chive does an exceptional job of relating to their audience (in good ways and bad), maintaining a simple interface, and constantly advocating honest, authentic, and raw material. However, what makes them so successful, in my opinion, is their ability to consistently strike a cord in their audience. Examples of charity, inspirational stories, or extremely funny material that most people relate to. Either through laughter or through inspiration, they keep people engaged and addicted to their app by consistently establishing deeper, stronger connections with their audience. CAUTION: The Chive is not exactly “G” rated material. They try to relate to all kinds of people, if you know what I mean. However, people see this slogan and their symbol, instantly feel or remember that connection, and yearn for more.
So if you want people to hear your message, find a way to establish deeper connections that are genuine and strong and people will not only listen, they will beg for more.
